着ぐるみ制作の現場 ２．...... Making Stuffed Doll No2

着ぐるみの世界でもブームというものがあって、背丈の大きいほうが

良かった時期と今のように小さければ小さいほど子どもたちには

人気があるという。 身長、１４５センチくらいの人が入って、

着ぐるみの出来上がりが１５０センチとか155センチくらいが、

子どもが怖がらずにいいらしい。佐藤さんは、出来上がった着ぐるみを見れば、

そこに愛情があるかないか感じるという。 ただ、マニュアルがあって、

自動的に作られているようなものはすぐに何かが足りないと感じられるという。

私は着ぐるみに愛情を入れるのは、中に入る人間のほうだと思っていたが、

なるほど・・・ 着ぐるみの作り一つに、

愛があるかお分かりになるとは、やはりその道で生きてきた方ならではの言葉だ。

着ぐるみは、中に入った人が汗でびっしょりになるため、

着ぐるみに汗のにおいが残らないように、乾かす乾燥機の開発も重要だという。

大抵は、発砲スチロールが基本だが、サトー工房では、それよりも軽い素材を

見つけ、重さに工夫されている。 ニーラのキャラクターも、何度も顔のカーブなど

細かく直していただき、愛らしい着ぐるみが仕上がった。

こうした着ぐるみの世界を心から愛情持っている方々に支えられて、

多くの夢を子どもたちに与えてきたんだと感激した。

佐藤さんの作られたものは、どこか愛らしい。

それはひとえに、佐藤さんの仕事にかける愛情が出ているんだと感じた。




Even in the world of costume, there is trend.
There were times when taller in height is more popular than
the smaller one. Nowadays smaller one about 150cm to 155cm is
widespread because children aren’t afraid of the size.
Mr. Sato finds out whether the doll is made with affection or not.
And he feels something is missing in the doll when it was made
mechanically along the manual.
I thought performer wearing the costume is the one who express
the loving character of the doll. But I see, in the process of making
costume, he finds out if there is love or not, that is surely the word of
making stuffed doll professionally.
The player sweats a lot, so that it is important to invent special drier
to vanish smells of sweat. Generally styrene foam is used to make dolls,
but in SATO Studio much lighter material is found and undergo
frequent improvements.
After Nira’s face line had adjusted a couple of times, finally the loving
character was completed. Mr. Sato’s doll is lovely, and that is surely
the reflection of his attitude towards his job.

ゆきのこうま .... Snowy Pony

新作絵本の「ゆきのこうま」が発売された。

この絵本は、「しろいねずみとくろいねずみシリーズ」の4作目。

冬のストーリーだ。

絵本の中に登場した雪の子馬の物語を信じているしろいねずみ〜

物語の中で語られたり現れたりするものというのは、

もしかしたら、現実よりもより真実を言い当てていることがあると思う。

お話の中身はここでは書かないけれど、雪国で子ども時代を過ごした私は、

やはり雪のシーンを描いている時には、無性に幸せを感じる。

あの雪国で今の私の核のすべてが創られたと思う。

子ども時代に体験した自然からのエネルギーというのは、

半端なく魂の中に刻み込められている。

私も、「ゆきのこうま」に会ってみたい・・・。




A new picture book,
“Snowy Pony” was published as the fourth and winter series
of “White mouse and Black mouse”.
One of the main characters of the book,
White Mouse believes the existence
of a snowy pony she met in a book.
Things in a fiction are sometimes revealing essential meanings
more than reflecting the reality.
I had better not to tell the story here, but living in the place where
it snowed a lot when I was small, I am extremely happy
while writing and drawing the snowy scene in the book.
I feel the main part of my character was greatly influenced
by such circumstances and natural energy experienced
in my childhood is deeply impressed in my soul.
I love to see Snowy Pony, too.

愛が宿る着ぐるみ制作１．.......Making a Stuffed Doll 1

絵本「ニーラ」の主人公はニーラは、魔法の星のカエルだ。

市制５５周年を目指して、ニーラの着ぐるみ制作を依頼することになったのが、

きめの細かな仕事で評判の「サトー工芸社」だった。

生田にある工房に足を運び、社長の佐藤さんと城戸さんにお会いした。

工房の中には、着ぐるみの頭や、発砲スチロールやスプレー、

布などがいっぱいに積まれていて何だかわくわくする。

佐藤さんは、この道４０年のベテランだ。

着ぐるみの制作現場での興味深いお話をいろいろ伺えた。

佐藤さんは、初めは映画作りをしたくて円谷プロに入社し、

ウルトラマンなどの怪獣に町が壊される仕掛を作っていらしたという。

そして独立して初めての仕事が、竜の子プロの「みなしごハッチ」のバレエ用の

着ぐるみだったという。 この話に私の目は輝いた！

私は「みなしごハッチ」が大好きだったのだ！

バレエを踊らなくちゃいけないから、大変なご苦労があったという。

着ぐるみでは初めて、目から実際に外が見える〜という風に作ったのも

初めてだったらしい。

着ぐるみは、人の目の位置に口の部分がきて、口から外を見るのが一般だ。

お話を伺ううちに佐藤さんの着ぐるみ制作にかける情熱は、

半端でないことが伝わってくる。

「今だに徹夜もされるし、最初の原型は佐藤さんがご自分で作られるんです」と、

良き片腕の城戸さんが話される。

私は佐藤さんに絵本、ニーラの三面図などをお渡しした。

それを見て佐藤さんは、この作家はどんなキャラクターを求めているのだろうかと、

自分なりに原型を十分の一で作られていくのだという。

面白かったのは、出来上がりにこんな寸法になるからといって、

その十分の一で作っても決して出来上がった時には、

イメージが違ってしまうのだという。

そこを計算して細かく直していかなければいけない。

特に目が重要で、もし目の位置が5ミリ違っても、

そのキャラクターに見えないこともあると言うのだ。

そして、テレビ用の着ぐるみの仕事は断られているというのだ。

出来上がった着ぐるみを見れば、愛情込めて作られたかどうかが、

すぐに分かるというのだ。

A main character of my new book is “Nira” a frog came from
wizardry planet.
A stuffed doll of “Nira” was made for the cerebration of fifty-five year
municipal system of Nirasaki city in Yamanashi Prefecture,
by SATO KOUGEISHA which has very good reputation of its works.
The other day, I visited the studio in Ikuta and met the director,
Mr. Sato who is a 40 year-expert in this field and his right hand woman,
Ms. Kido. I was very excited to see a lot of heads of stuffed dolls,
styrene foam, sprays, and cloths piling up here and there in the studio.
When he was young, he was interested in making films so that he entered
Tsuburaya Productions and was making ULTRAMAN scene.
After he was independent from the Productions, “Minashigo Hutch” of
Tastunoko Productions was his first work. I was excited to hear that because
I liked the story very much.
By talking to him, I could feel his passion for his work.
Ms. Kido said that he still works over night and always makes first original
form by himself. The most interesting thing is that even if they make a tenth
part miniature of the original size, the workmanship would not be the same.
Specially, slightly different position of the eyes makes big difference in the
image of the character.
They said that they would easily find out if the character was made with
affection or not.

球根 ...... Tulip Bulbs

今年も１００個のチューリップの球根を植えることが出来た。

去年は仕事に追われ、結局植えることが出来たのは、

年を越えた1月の末だった。結果は、三分の一くらいが芽を出し花を咲かせたが、

今一つ元気のない花だった。やっぱり、種でも球根でも植え付け時期が袋に

書かれているがそれは重要なことだと思い知った。

いくら地球が暖かくなったとはいえ、球根たちにはちゃんと

芽を出し花を咲かせる時期がインプットされているのだ。

友だちの子どもたち、美音ちゃん、タクミ君、

なほちゃんが手伝ってくれてわいわいしながら、

あっという間に球根を植えることが出来た。

タクミ君は、土を掘っている時に出会ったカマキリを怖がりもせずに

手にはわせて見せた。やっぱり男の子の虫好きは小さい頃から違うなあ。

白いコガネ虫の幼虫が出てきた時も、可哀想だから土に戻して埋めてあげていて、

思いやりの心を見て嬉しかった。

みんなありがとう！

次の日、５才の美音ちゃんと電話で話したら、

「春が来るのが楽しみ」と言っていた。本当に楽しみだ。




A few days ago, we finally planted 100 tulip bulbs in my garden.

Last year, I was too busy to plant the bulbs, but somehow I managed to
plant them at the end of January next year,
a couple of months later than the usual planting time.
In the spring, eventually one thirds of the bulbs had sprouted, and bloomed,
but they looked weak.
I realized the importance of following the right planting time,
usually written on the package of the bulbs.
Even if the temperature of the earth is going high,
the bulbs know by itself when to sprout and flower.

A few days ago, children of my friends, Mion, Naho,
and Takumi came over and helped me to plow the open space of
my garden and put the 100 bulbs in the ground. So we soon finished it.
During the work, Takumi showed us a praying mantis creeping on his hand.
I was pleased to see his kindness when a larva of Japanese gold beetle
came out by digging the soil, he put it back and buried it in the ground.

Thank you for your help!

Next day when I talked to 5-year-old Mion,
she said she was looking forward to seeing the tulips coming in spring.
Yes, it really is!

薬師寺の吉祥天像 ....... Kichijo-ten in Yakushiji-Temple

これは、奈良、

天平時代の女性の理想像として描かれた

「薬師寺の吉祥天」だ。

私はこの絵を見ると、

いつも母を思い出す、大好きな絵だ。

仏教では、如来とか菩薩とか、

明王とか天などと名のつく仏さまがあって、

位は観音様やお不動様より下ですが、

福徳を授ける仏様としてあがめられています。

薬師寺の吉祥天は、極彩色が施されていてたいそう美しく、

ふくよかな下ぶくれ、まゆが太く、目が細長く、

くちびるが厚くて小さい・・・ よくふとって健康的。

こういう女性が生き生きとした美人と呼ばれたのだという。

私も日々、ダイエットしたい！

と騒いでいるけれど、本当の女性の美しさには、

まろやか、柔らかい、丸みをおびた曲線・・・

という言葉は最高な男には持っていない、女だけの持つ美だと思う。

季節も秋、奈良に行って本物を見に行ってみたいと思う。




This “Kichijo-ten” at Yakushiji-Temple was painted as an ideal image of
woman during　Nara and Tempyo period.
I like this picture very much because it reminds me of my mother.
In Buddhism, Kichijo-ten is deified as a Buddha of benevolence
and happiness.
The beautifully painted figure of The Kichijo-ten is soft,
plump and healthy. And the bushy eyebrows, slender eyes,
and thick and small lips, give more attractive expression on her face.
This type of woman was considered to be lively beautiful during that times.
Now the season is autumn,
I love to go to Nara and see the real beauty of Kichijo-ten in my eyes.
